Since 23 February, a new taxi rank has been in operation in the Barcelona Front Marítim district, regulated by public organisations to ensure order and safety for its users.
The primary purpose of this initiative, backed by a group of business owners in the hospitality sector and founders of the Associació Front Marítim Barceloneta, is to avoid disturbing the residents’ night-time tranquillity and to enhance the safety of the customers of the local nocturnal haunts.
The taxi rank is located in Carrer Ramon Trías Fargas. All the taxi drivers must respect their turn in the line and customers must wait their turn in the queue and obey the instructions of the officers in charge of maintaining order in the area by using signals.
The Metropolitan Taxi Institute (IMET) will fine any taxi driver who does not comply with the operating regulations and any taxi driver clocking up several fines will risk having their license revoked.
This step was made in response to the need to adapt to the changes in this area as demanded by the residents. It is hoped that the taxi drivers and the Barcelona City Hall will work together with the local police and business owners in the initiative.
