We are about to celebrate Sant Joan’s day, the shortest night and the longest day of the year. For many Catalans, it is one of the most important festivities, where the arrival of summer is celebrated. It’s also considered as a rite to give strength to the sun, because since the 24th the countdown begins and the days are shortened progressively until the arrival of the Winter Solstice.

This day is also strongly rooted in two elements; to fire, which represents purity, and to water, which symbolizes healing. It is for this reason that the people of Barcelona take advantage of the eve of June 24 to enjoy outside making bonfires, throwing firecrackers, enjoying fireworks shows and swimming in the sea. Do not forget the official treat for this day, the Coca of Sant Joan, which will be the protagonist in all the bakeries of the city.

In Barcelona, many entities organize popular festivals throughout the streets and the main squares; with orchestras, dances and bonfires. But there is a place that you can’t miss: The Barceloneta. A good way to spend this day is by going to the beach of Barceloneta. With more than 1000 meters of sand it makes it one of the favourite places among Catalans to celebrate this day.

Good atmosphere, bonfires, beach … is there something better? Apart from being in an exceptional geographical situation thanks to the good communication by public transport with other areas; the old fishing district has hundreds of restaurants, bars and clubs in the right in the shore where you can enjoy this day.

Here we leave you a list with the best parties to celebrate Sant Joan
