Considered one of the centenary markets of Barcelona, the Mercado de la Barceloneta is today one cheerful and lively market that locals and tourists must visit without any doubt.
It was born as an outdoor market in 1753 at the Sant Miquel square. When the Barceloneta was purely a sailor´s neighbourhood, the commercial activity of buying and selling fish happened in this place. Citizens from everywhere came to the market so much that it became a city reference and finally in 1884 the community decided to build a modernist structure to shelter it.
During the civil war, the façade was very affected and it was reconstructed in 1939. However, it was not until 2005 that they took the decision to renew it completely becoming the market that we know today, preserving the original iron structure, a characteristic of that time´s building.
To this day, the Mercado de la Barceloneta it is not only a food market, but it has an active role in sustainability. Reflected in the residual separation methods, the recycling plan and the solar panels which are capable of producing 40% of the market´s electricity.
Although the main activity is still based on fishing, we can also find butcheries, fruits and vegetables, gourmet products and many restaurants.
Now you do have enough reasons to visit this incredible market!
